As someone who gets very bored very easily, I find it difficult to watch just one show at a time. Even binge-watching can get messy, because I’ll quit in the middle of an episode and not come back for months. I never had this issue with Netflix’s original show “Jessica Jones.”

As Netflix is constantly putting out new shows, series that have been up for only a year or two can seem like old news. However, if you haven’t already seen it, I highly recommend watching this action-packed series.

This show, based on a Marvel comics character, follows the title character as she begins to use her super strength and the skills that she has learned as a private detective to keep New York City’s Hell’s Kitchen safe from harm. Her past is rife with difficult family and romantic relationships, which impact how she decided to use her powers.

Jones is no Superman–she struggles to help others as she feels she can barely help herself. However, it is exactly this quality that I find so appealing in a Marvel character. Far from perfect, Jones makes impulsive, often dangerous decisions, and grapples with major issues faced by not only heroes but members of the general population. These problems extend beyond her love life into areas that are sometimes scary to think about, such as mental health issues and the after-effects of an abusive relationship. Although I can’t say that I’ve experienced most of the things that Jones went through, watching made me realize more about how and why different people react to tough situations, and caused me to wonder how I would react in Jones’s situation.

TV can be a mindless escape from homework and the day-to-day world, and there’s nothing wrong with wanting to spend a little time in another reality. However, coupling episodes that are meaningful and thought-provoking with action and the beloved concept of superheroes resulted in a much more enjoyable experience for me as a viewer.

Although I’d watch this show just because of the strong female characters, I recommend it to others because of its coverage of abuse and rape. It helps viewers to understand the situation from a victim’s point of view, and masters conveying difficult themes.
