This season, the boys’ basketball team has kept students worried for the win up until the last few seconds, but the senior night game against Bishop Ward Feb. 21 ended very differently.  Tuesday night the boys ended the first quarter leading 15-1, but by the end of fourth they led Bishop Ward 66-25 to win the game.

Usually, the boys’ games are played by a select group of about seven players, but during senior night the whole team played, including manager senior Dirk Beashore.  The team has shown a lot of cooperation and improvement throughout the season.

“Nothing at all has changed for the Pirates,” senior Miciah Noel said. “Goals are still set and there are still barriers to be broken.”

At the beginning of the season, the team had three goals; win the league, beat Basehor-Linwood to end a 10-year drought and go to Salina for state. The team is one game away from being KVL league champions, and that game will be Friday Feb. 24 at Turner. If the boys win, they will end this season undefeated within the league.

Before the game against Bishop Ward, the team was ranked third in the Kansas Basketball Coaches Association rankings for class 4A and first in the Kaw Valley League. The girls’ team are also currently first in KVL with a 17-1 overall record and 10-0 in the league.

Sub-state will be held at the high school March 2-4 where the boys will have to beat Basehor-Linwood one more time to accomplish their goal to make it to state. The boys will play March 2, the girls will play March 3 and the winners of both sides of the tournaments will play championship games March 4 to determine which schools send their teams to state.
