  • Senior Patricia Telthorst paces herself to keep ahead of her competitors in the 200-meter freestyle at the swim meet at Shawnee Mission East April 21. Usually completed in about two minutes, the 200-meter freestyle required the swimmers to use both long-distance swimming skills and sprinting skills in order to win.

  • Freshman PaNhia Penney dives over junior Savannah Stimac for the 200-meter freestyle relay. Each swimmer sprinted 50 meters, then joined their teammates to help cheer one another on. Pressure was high when the relay team competed against five other teams and had a large crowd in attendance.

  • Sophomore Kyli Winkler, junior Cody Lau, senior Suzeth Cabrera, junior Mallori Courtney and sophomore Alba Centeno Lopez cheer for their teammate during a relay. Relay teams with a similar time were at the opposite end of the pool, so it was important to have some nearby encouragement in order to win.

  • Sophomore Taran Kerst, senior Karli Trumbo and junior Grace Vogel count laps for their teammate in the 500-meter freestyle. The swimmer completed 20 25-meter laps, and Kerst, Trumbo and Vogel monitored the timing and provided encouragement throughout the long distance event.

  • Senior Megan Dailey dives over freshman Courtney Johnson on Piper’s fastest relay team for the 400-meter freestyle relay. Each swimmer sprinted 100 meters and attempted to outpace teams in the middle two lanes. This team swam against the fastest swimmers at the meet and had to execute dives, turns and the strokes perfectly in order to compete successfully.
