New government teacher reflects on his transition

Among the new staff this year is government teacher Daryl Graham, who was hired during the summer after former teacher Curtis Hamilton resigned.

“It was great moving back to Kansas,” Graham said. “The students and administration at Piper are great.”

Originally from Fort Scott, Graham moved to Cocoa Beach, Florida to pursue a personal hobby.

“I moved to Florida to coach baseball,” Graham said. “I used to play semi-pro ball in Missouri for a couple of summers, and then I switched to coaching.”

Alongside coaching, Graham also taught at the local high school.

“The kids in Florida are nothing like they are here,” Graham said. “It was a change for me, but it was a great experience.”
Despite moving away from the beach, Graham said it was worth it because Kansas is where home is.

“Moving back to Kansas felt normal,” Graham said. “It was hard leaving the beach, but Kansas is where my family lives so it was a good transition.”
