I am so tired.

I am tired of the same debate being held over and over after every mass shooting. Every time I am constantly faced with the same question: “Will there ever be change?” We send thoughts and prayers to the victims, which is nice, but it is not enough. Senators are sending prayers, yet will turn around and vote to give mentally unstable people access to assault rifles. They will vote to give people on the no-fly list access to assault rifles. And now there is an upcoming vote on whether or not to allow the sales of silencers, devices used to silence gun fire. We can’t continue on the same pattern of each new disaster being the “greatest massacre in modern America” and keep the same laws allowing these mass shootings to happen.

I am tired of seeing another hashtag after every devastating killing in America, which seems to be almost biweekly. There was five people shot in Lawrence this week. Forty-five minutes from us. Three dead. People in the Piper community were friends with one of the girls horribly killed. But this was overlooked by the mass shooting in Las Vegas where 59 people are dead and hundreds injured. These killings are so common that we breeze by one to pray for the other. I am tired of praying without change.

All I ask is to stop being a bystander to these horrific acts. Try to be the change you wish to see. Call your senators. Be an advocate for increased background checks. Whatever it is, don’t sit back and hope someone else makes a difference, because that is why we are stuck here in the first place. Our democracy is ran by the people for the people, and it depends on the participation of citizens in our government, so please help all you can.
