Spring sports preview

The girls’ soccer team won the regional championship last season, and is preparing to do so again this season. “We have a great blend of experienced players as well as new faces,” Dickes said. “I am already impressed with the work ethic and will to win that each player is showing.”

As the weather begins to warm, spring sports are gearing up for the upcoming season. Practices for baseball, softball, track, girls’ soccer, girls’ swim, and boys’ golf all started Feb. 26. They will continue to prepare for games and meets, which will be starting after spring break. Here’s some basic information about the teams as they begin their seasons:

Baseball:

  • Head coach: Matt Reitemeier
  • Assistant coaches: Daryl Graham, Randy Robertson, Pat Kirwan
  • Season goal: “One of the main goals I have for the season is to see the baseball players play as a team and play selfless baseball players,” Reitemeier said. “Of course I would also like to see our guys win our regional tournament and compete at state!”
  • First game: Home, March 28 vs. Miege

Softball:

  • Head coach: Stan Mcafee
  • Assistant coaches:  Angie Mullens, Scott Teufel, Alison Brown
  • First game: Away, April 7 at Bishop Ward  

Track:

  • Head coach: Josh Baxter
  • Assistant coaches: Chris Brindle, Bob Lockwood, Mike Naster, Kelsie Johnston
  • Season goal: “We would like to continue our success from last season,” Baxter said. “We lost a lot of seniors but we hope our young athletes will step up and fill the void.”
  • First meet: Away, March 26 at Lansing

Girls’ soccer:

  • Assistant coach: Brian Gray
  • Season goal: “My main goal for the season is for our team to effectively work together and have continual improvement,” Dickes said.

Girls’ swim:

  • Head coach: Amy Bartlow
  • Assistant coach: Dylan Meeker
  • First meet: Away, March 28 at Osawatomie

Boys’ golf:

  • Head coach: Steve Pope
  • Season goal: Pope said his main goal is to qualify as a team for state.”
