After winning the state competition Nov. 17 in Topeka, the cheer team will be heading to Dallas, Texas to compete in the National Cheerleaders Association High School Nationals Jan. 26 and 27.

The team will be competing in the “Game Day” category. They will perform a band chant, a cheer performed along with the band, at 11:42 a.m., followed by a regular sideline cheer at 1:23 p.m. and conclude the competition with a fight song at 2:24 p.m. The award ceremony will be at 4:03 p.m.

As of Jan. 29, the team placed fifth place in the fight song, sixth place in the band chant and seventh place in the cheer for individual competitions. There was a total of 23 teams in each category the team performed in.

“We went into nationals with the intentions of just having fun, so we were shocked when we placed top 10 in all three performances and ended up sixth overall,” senior cheer captain Jada Simmons said.

The team placed sixth in the nation out of 23 teams based on performances from each category.

“It still feel surreal to me,” Simmons said.
