NFL Season Wrap Up

The Chiefs have a Bright Future

A MVP quarterback, historically great offense and the first home playoff win since 1993. In Patrick Mahomes’s first year as the starting quarterback, he showed Kansas City how bright the future can be. The Chiefs’s offense was the best in the league with Mahomes at the helm, and the strong offense led the team to a 12-4 record and an appearance in the AFC Championship game.

The Chiefs currently have a young star-studded offense with a bright future for years to come. The only problem with the team is the defense. The front office should devote all of their time and money towards improving it this offseason. The Chiefs shouldn’t worry about saving money or going for the cheaper player. They need to go into free agency and sign the best available. If the front office truly cares about winning and the success of the team and the city then they will do what it takes to get a formidable defense. There needs to be at least three signings on the defensive side of the ball, and most of the draft picks should be dedicated to defense as well. Currently, the defense is young and has pieces that could develop into a strong defense with smart additions to the team. If the defense can become stronger, the Chiefs will be a tough team to beat in the coming years.

The Chiefs had a great season with a young squad full of talent that should be successful for many years to come. When the Chiefs add some defense to the already strong offense, then Patrick Mahomes can be expected to lead this franchise to success and Super Bowls.

[/sidebar]Four months of intense practice in all weather, 17 hard-fought games, a historical offensive season––all to have it end without the offense touching the ball. That was the story for the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC Championship game.

The Chiefs were up against the New England Patriots, and it had been a competitive game all the way through. The Chiefs were down 31-28 and fought back to tie the game at 31 with a field goal in the final seconds of regulation and sent the game to overtime.

After four intense quarters that led to overtime, the Chiefs’ offense didn’t even get to touch the ball. NFL overtime rules are sudden death. If the team that receives the ball scores a touchdown the game is over and they win the game. If they don’t score or get a field goal, then the other team has a chance to score and win the game. This method may work well in the regular season, but there should be change for the playoffs.

Fans want to see the best players on the field and making plays in the big moments. Instead, the league’s MVP Patrick Mahomes didn’t even touch the field in overtime.

With the high powered offenses in the NFL these days, sudden death overtime is essentially who can win the coin toss and start with the ball. If the Chiefs would have won the coin toss, there is no doubt in my mind that they would be headed to the Super Bowl.

The NFL should change playoff overtime rules to be similar to college overtime rules. The NCAA rules make for more fair outcomes. A coin toss decides who gets the ball first and after that each team gets a possession. The offenses start from the defense’s 25 yard line and attempt to score. If the score is tied after those two possessions, the teams flip-flop order and do it again.

The NFL should go to this format to create more excitement in playoff games and to see the athletes play to the full extent of their ability. This format also allows for players to see their season out and not have to rely on a coin toss to win what could be the biggest football game of their career. Right now the difference between being in the Super Bowl and not can be as simple as a coin toss, and that should change.
