Four Years in the Making: Years after box-office breaking Avatar premiered a second one is underway

With a budget of $280 million, Avatar became one of the most expensive movies made, due to it being 40% live action and 60% photo-realistic CGI.The movie quickly made over $2.7 billion when it came out in 2009. Today, the only movie to break this record is Avengers: Endgame.

People loved how unique the film was and demanded a sequel. While director James Cameron initially wanted to end the story at the first movie, he was eventually convinced by a petition made and signed by over a hundred thousand people. Cameron not only filmed a sequel, but started an Avatar franchise, and has produced four other movies since.

The next Avatar movie is set to come out in 2021. Unlike the typical movie that can be filmed, edited and ready to premiere in under a year, it takes roughly four years to make an Avatar movie because of all of the CGI. The movie will also be in 3D to add even more detail.

Two more Avatar movies are in the process of being filmed in California, and are set to come out in 2023. There isn’t much known about what these next movies are set to look like. However, the plot will be about another invasion. There are a lot of questions that still need to be answered. We know that most of the cast is returning such as Sigourney Weaver, Sam Worthington, and Zoe Saldana. Saldana also plays Gamora in Guardians of the galaxy. Some new faces are joining the franchise as well such as Vin Diesel and Kate Winslet.

Sure, the CGI screen work makes this movie what it is, but there are so many other little details in the movie that people just don’t know about. The sound artists in the movie used actual animal noises for the beasts in the movie, like hyenas and coyotes. Also every Na’vi outfit was created in real life. Not everything was made in CGI, because the director wanted to make this fantasy movie as realistic as possible.

One of the craziest facts that people don’t know is that the title Avatar refers to a genetically engineered Na’Vi body. The body is operated from the brain of a remotely located human that is used to interact with the natives of Pandora.

The budget did not stop at filming, however. It was estimated that they spent roughly $150 million dollars just on promotion. Cameron is a director that will do whatever it takes to make his movies successful and he did just that.

There are a lot of expectations for the new Avatar movies. The first movie will be tough to top, but director James Cameron is up for the challenge. He says that, “Imagination is a force that can actually manifest a reality. Don’t put limitations on yourself. People already do that for you.”

The Avatar franchise has a good chance to become the top grossing franchise of all time. We will see if the next movies live up to expectations, but if I do know one thing, it is that I will be in that movie theatre on December 17th, 2021 along with millions of others.
