While students prepare for prom April 20, teachers have taken the opportunity to pull out their dusty yearbooks and review the proms they attended while in high school. Some remembered everything down to what color the napkins were; others couldn’t remember what their meal was.
Tiffany Scheffler kept a scrapbook of everything related to prom her sophomore, junior and senior years. This included how much her dresses cost, what was served for dinner and what the theme was.
“A Night to Remember” was the theme of Scott Teufel’s junior prom. It was also the theme of Darcy Lucas’ senior prom and Darcey Bast’s prom.
Teufel said, “I only remember that theme because I was the one who came up with it.”
Both Bast and Leslie McAfee made dresses for their proms.
Teacher Mark Turrentine has a unique memory from prom his junior year. Turrentine went to Florida for spring break with a group of seniors.
“I thought I was really cool, getting invited to go with the seniors,” Turrentine said.
While in Florida, he met Sandy Stevens, a senior.
“I asked her to prom, and of course I thought I was pretty hot stuff.”
Turrentine had a maroon tuxedo, which he described as being “pretty gaudy.” When Turrentine picked up his tux the day of the prom, he was in for a big surprise.
“I didn’t try on the pants when I picked them up, and when I put them on they were 6 inches too short,” Turrentine said. “I didn’t have a choice. I had to wear them because it was a half hour before I was going.”
Turrentine said they got through it, but she was embarrassed.
“When I picked her up, she was like ‘what in the world?’”
Turrentine offers one piece of advice to the gentlemen going to prom.
“A word to the wise, try on the tux before you leave the store.”
