Keegan Sparks

Hi guys! Thanks for tuning in. This week, I’d like to spotlight a recent obsession of mine: Broods.

Broods is an indie pop duo, comprised of siblings Georgia and Caleb Nott. Georgia, the lead vocalist of the group, is 20, two years younger than her talented brother Caleb. Caleb primarily serves a producer for the two, but often provides backing vocals during the pair’s live performances. He plays many instruments, including the piano, drums, guitar, and synthesizer, among others.

The twosome has performed together since childhood. They grew up in a highly musical family. According to an interview conducted by Vevo DSCVR, Georgia claimed that in their home, “there were more guitars than people.” During their younger years at a New Zealand boarding school, they were members of an indie rock band, The Peasants. After that group split, they went their separate ways, attending college. After discovering the student life simply wasn’t for them, they dropped out in order to pursue their latest musical project: Broods.

Success came like a whirlwind for Broods. They collaborated with music producer Joel Little, who had experience producing music for New Zealand’s national treasure, Lorde. They released their debut single, “Bridges,” via the popular music sharing app, SoundCloud, in Oct. 2013. The song spread like wildfire, allowing the two to sign their first record deal with Polydor Records.

They released their debut EP, Broods, Jan. 31, 2014 to widespread critical acclaim. The album reached number two in their native New Zealand. They then made their second album, which is my preference of the two, Evergreen. This album was widely acclaimed as well. It topped the charts in New Zealand, as well as reaching number five in Australia.

I love Broods’ music for a wide variety of reasons. First, the lyrical content of their songs is so deep and introspective, especially for people in their age demographic. The theme of growing up in a turbulent world is a consistent one in their music, a rare find in today’s shallow and vapid music industry. Georgia Nott’s voice is another great reason to love Broods. Her gentle soprano has a pleasant tone and hits the ear very well. Her voice does a great job of expressing the mature and dark themes in Broods’ music without create a dark mood.

Broods may not be well known in America, but they are certainly up-and-coming. Check them out!
