Humans of PHS: Summer Hatfield

After six years of gymnastics, freshman Summer Hatfield had reached expertise level 5, which was the highest level a pre-graduate gymnast could reach at KC Cheer.

Hatfield had been into gymnastics from an early age.

“I started tumbling in my house, and my mom decide to enroll me in classes,” Hatfield said.

Two years ago, Hatfield realized that even though she loved gymnastics she couldn’t advance any more until college. That was when she decided to transfer to a cheer program at KC Cheer. KC Cheer is a cheerleading program in the Kansas City Metro area, that offers classes and competitive team events. She is now a Senior 5 in cheer, which is also the highest ranking Hatfield can receive until she goes to college.

Hatfield has competed for National Cheer Association at Cheer Nationals and at World Championships in Dallas, and also for Universal Cheer Association in Florida.

This past year Hatfield said she was suffering from “mental block” when she started falling.

“I was really scared. I actually wanted to quit.” Hatfield said she was to a breaking point.

She pulled through and said she still hopes to become a cheerleader at the University of Kansas while she studies physical therapy.
