Humans of PHS: Caleb Boyle

The typical teen may choose babysitting, a clothing store or a restaurant as their first job. Senior Caleb Boyle, however, took a completely different route while he was searching for his first job six years ago. Instead of applying for a basic busboy job at Danny’s, Boyle decided to work at the Kansas City Renaissance Festival.

The Renaissance Festival was established in Kansas City in 1977, and has been around every year since then. The Renaissance Festival is just what it sounds like – a festival with activities, shops, food and characters based around the Renaissance.

There are various jobs that one can do at the festival, and although they may seem boring on the surface, many of them have their own little Renaissance twist. For example, Boyle said that people who work as cashiers have to dress up in Renaissance-style clothing, along with the actors throughout the festival that entertain visitors.

Boyle, however, is not a cashier or an actor. In previous years, he worked as a cook in a food booth, but this year he chose to be a “runner.” A runner is someone who delivers goods throughout the festival to the places that need them. Since both of these jobs are behind the scenes, Boyle has never had to dress in a costume for work.

Contrary to many teens, Boyle doesn’t just like his job because of the money. He said that what he likes most about the Renaissance Festival is, “all the different types of people who you get to meet.” He said that he has made a ton of new friends as a member of the festival staff.

Boyle was unable to pinpoint a single best experience working at the Renaissance Festival. He said that since each day holds something new, every new year also holds something different, yet equally enjoyable.

“The Renaissance Festival is a fun place,” Boyle said. “It may seem strange or weird, but it’s a good place to have fun and meet new people.”
